BEREND HOUWEN MEMORIAL LECTURE

The International Society for Laboratory Hematology (ISLH) established the "Berend Houwen Memorial Lecture" in 2005 to honor the founder of our organization. The awardee will present a Keynote lecture at the ISLH Annual Meeting during the opening plenary session and will be asked to submit a review paper on their lecture in the Society’s official journal, the International Journal of Laboratory Hematology.  The individual chosen to give the Berend Houwen Memorial Lecture should exemplify the scientific excellence, outstanding values and quest for knowledge embodied by Berend. While not essential, significant past or present contributions to ISLH are desirable.

Berend Houwen, MD, PhD, was the driving force to incorporate ISLH in 1992, and continued to be a leader in Laboratory Hematology research, innovation, and education until his untimely death in February 2004. To learn more about this unique man and his career, please see Bruce Davis' tribute.

WALLACE H. COULTER DISTINGUISHED LECTURE

The International Society for Laboratory Hematology (ISLH) established the "Wallace H. Coulter Distinguished Lecture Award" in 2015 in honor of Wallace H. Coulter's many outstanding contributions to humanity and his many inventions and innovations that advanced the field of laboratory hematology and many other areas of medicine and science. The lecture is supported by a grant from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation. The award recognizes outstanding, innovative achievement, inventiveness, and entrepreneurship in medicine and science, in fields that are relevant to the laboratory hematology community.

The individual chosen to give the Wallace H. Coulter Distinguished Lecture should exemplify the outstanding spirit of invention, innovation and entrepreneurship, and the quest for scientific advances to benefit humanity that made Wallace H. Coulter a giant in the fields of science and medicine. This award recognizes individuals who are undertaking outstanding, cutting edge research and have made significant new discoveries, with broad potential and relevance to patient care. NOTE: this award has a different focus than the Berend Houwen Lecture Award, which recognizes and honors the lifetime career achievements of Berend who had a pivotal role in founding our society and the field of laboratory hematology.
